Dries started playing football while in school. He is one of the beneficiaries of Belgium's youth football revolution that began after the 1998 World Cup. Over 30 federation coaches drafted a blueprint to provide funds for Belgian clubs to develop young talents.

Stade Leuven (1996-1998)

The winger started his youth career at Stade Leuven. He spent two years with the club before Anderlecht spotted him. Anderlecht was one of the top teams that received funds to scout and nurture young talents.

Anderlecht (1998-2003)

Mertens joined Anderlecht's academy in 1998, where he honed his skills for five years. Unfortunately, he was released in 2003 because coaches believed he was too short and physically unfit to compete.

Gent (2003-2007)

The winger then joined Gent, where he finished his youth career. However, Dries Mertens' height became another reason for his rejection, this time by Gent's coaches. As a result, he was sent on a season-long loan to Eendracht Aalst.

His first senior contract came during his loan spell in Dutch third division side Eendracht Aalst from Gent. However, he only spent one season at the club and moved to AGOVV Apeldoorn.

AGOVV Apeldoorn (2006-2009)

The Belgian joined AGOVV Apeldoorn on loan in 2006. It is here that he excelled and even became a captain. In 2009, he won the Gouden Stier award for the best player in the Dutch second division.

Utrecht (2009-2011)

Dries made his Eredivisie debut for Utrecht in 2009 at 22, after completing a $611,000 move from AGOVV. He scored six league goals for Utrecht in his debut season and finished as runner-up to Ajax's Luis Suarez for the Dutch Footballer of the Year prize.

He was also awarded the Di Tommaso Trophy for Utrecht's Player of the Season. The 35-year-old helped the club qualify for Europe for the first time in four years.

PSV Eindhoven (2011-2013)

Dries signed for PSV in June 2011 and scored in his first competitive match in a 3-1 defeat to AZ on 7 August 2011. He later scored a hat trick for the club in a 6-1 win over Excelsior on 28 August that year.

He finished his first season as the fourth top scorer in the Eredivisie after netting 21 goals in 33 matches. During his tenure at PSV, he won the KNVB Cup (2011-12) and the Johan Cruyff Shield (2012).

Napoli (2013-date)

The Italian club paid PSV around $9.7 million to land the 1.69 m tall striker. Their new signing made his first appearance in a 3-0 victory over Bologna on 25 August 2013 as a substitute. After that, Mertens transformed into a prolific goalscorer and a playmaker.

He became Napoli's all-time top scorer with 122 goals after netting an equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan on 13 June 2020. He was also part of the Serie A Team of the Season, 2016-17. The Belgian has won two Coppa Italia titles (2013-14, 2019-20) and Supercoppa Italiana (2014) with Napoli. He is currently the club's best scorer in history.
