His tumultuous childhood was marked by the ethnic war between Bosnia and Croatia. He has recounted how his mother saved his life by refusing to let him play out on a street bombed shortly afterwards.

He speaks Bosnian, Czech, German, English and Italian languages fluently. He is a Muslim and has both Bosnian and Croatian citizenship. In November 2009, Dzeko became Bosnia's first UNICEF ambassador and represented children affected by the Bosnian war.
