Veteran Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich is set to play until he is 41 after he reportedly shunned retirement.

Ibrahimovic is currently out of contract after running down his contract with Italian champions, AC Milan.

According to The Sun, the 40-year-old became a free agent at the end of June following the expiry of his contract at Milan.

The publication claims the former Barcelona forward was almost forced into retirement recently due to a severe knee injury.

It is understood that he played without an ACL last season and now stares at a gruelling journey to recovery after undergoing successful surgery.

Zlatan Ibrahimovich lands new deal with AC Milan

Despite his injury struggles, AC Milan are said to have offered the former Sweden international a contract extension.

The development was confirmed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted that Zlatan will be getting a new one-year contract at San Siro.

“Zlatan Ibrahimovic has decided to extend his contract with AC Milan," Fabrizio claimed in a tweet.
“Zlatan will continue for one more season, agreement in place until June 2023," he added.

Despite his advanced age, the former Paris Saint-Germain striker enjoyed a successful season with Milan, scoring eight goals in 27 matches to help the club claim their first Scudetto in a decade.

Ex-Chelsea duo inspire AC Milan to Serie A triumph

Earlier, Sports Brief reported the pair of Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori played a crucial role in AC Milan's Serie A title triumph.

The former Chelsea players were in action on Sunday, May 22, as Milan demolished Sassuolo 3-0 to win the Italian title.

Giroud scored a brace during the clash to inspire Stefano Pioli's charges to victory at the Mapei Stadium.

The Frenchman joined AC Milan last summer after quitting Chelsea where he had spent four years.
