CAF Unveils the Only Nigerian Footballer Nominated in 10 Man List for Africa’s Young Player of the Year

Nigerian youngster Akinkunmi Amoo has been named in a 10-man shortlist for the CAF Young Footballer of the Year award.

The uncapped Super Eagles midfielder joins nine other nominees in the category for young players.

Other nominees include Ivory Coast’s Karim Konate, Jesus Owono of Equatorial Guinea, Burkina Faso’s Dango Ouattara and James Gomez of the Gambia.

Kamaldeen Sulemana from Ghana, Ilaix Moriba of Guinea, Mali’s El Bilal Toure, Pape Matar Sarr of Senegal and Tunisia’s Hannibal Mejbri are all nominated for the award as well.

Soccernet reports that Amoo is in an illustrious circle as he’s up against some of the continent’s finest young footballers.

The 20-year-old who moved to Danish club Copenhagen during the January transfer window has resumed training and is on the shortlist, but he is the only one yet to be capped by his country at the senior level.

He was sensational at the U-17 level but did not feature at the U20 level. His invitation to the 2021 AFCON was late and he didn’t make it to the competition.

Akinkunmi Amoo was, however, part of Nigeria’s squad who missed out on the 2022 World Cup to Ghana.
