Unlike several well-known professional athletes, the French-Canadian was raised in a tight-knit family with no athletic background. Despite this, the defenseman began playing soccer, skating and ice hockey at 3 years. In an interview with the Penguins Team Reporter, Michelle Crechiolo, he said,

"There's no background of any athlete in my family. No brother, no sister. I went in hockey a year earlier because I was able to skate."

Since he played for the city and high school teams, he credits his mother for encouraging him. In the interview, he added that,

"I never got pushed into hockey. "It was always a question of if I still loved to play the game, and if not, we would stop. She (Christiane) was my biggest supporter."
