However, De Jong could scupper United's transfer plans for him, with Sport claiming that the Dutchman has informed both the Red Devils and Barca that he has no intention of leaving Camp Nou this summer.
It is believed that the former Ajax star is unhappy with Barcelona pushing for his transfer to Old Trafford.
Reports suggest the 25-year-old is determined to stay at the Catalan club at least for another season.
The development comes just weeks after the Netherlands international made clear his desire to continue at Barcelona.
"I prefer to stay with Barcelona. Barcelona is just my dream club," De Jong told ESPN in May.
"Also from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes," he added.
