  • MM Platinum were crowned the winners of the 2021/22 ABC Motsepe League national champions after downing Magesi FC 1-0 in the final at Olen Park in Potchefstroom
  • La Masia, as the club has come to be famously known, struck late via Sipho Mahlangu in the 74th minute of the match
  • It was not a disastrous loss for the Limpopo stream champions, as they and the Gauteng champions were already assured places in the GladAfrica Championship next season

MM Platinum will head into the new week a cool R1-million richer after clinching the 2021/22 ABC Motsepe League national championship.

La Masia, as they are famously known, defeated Magesi FC 1-0 in the grand final at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday afternoon. Sipho Mahlangu's tasty chip over the onrushing Magesi goalkeeper in the 74th minute was enough to give La Masia the victory.

La Masia, who are the champions of the Gauteng champions and Magesi, the champions of Limpopo, were already assured a place in next season's GladAfrica championship by virtue of qualifying for the final. They will replace Jomo Cosmos and TS Sporting, who suffered the ignominy of being relegated last season.

As was reported by iDiski Times, the match understandably lacked intensity because of the comfort both sides were in. It wasn't until MM Platinum thought they had a penalty in the 57th minute after Joshua Sauls was brought down in the box that the match came alive, with the referee not awarding it.

Eventually Sipho Mahlangu racing onto a good over-the-top pass from Sheldon Van Wyk, before chipping over Tebogo Semenya, the Magesi goalkeeper.

Despite a few late attempts from Magesi to get back into the game, goalkeeper Sidingo Nxumalo was on hand to deny the Limpopo outfit.

Magesi were reduced to ten men in the 87th minute when Junior Lethwaba received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card, and MM Platinum were the able to manage the game and hold onto victory.

The Gauteng champions, coached by Dalano Hendricks and Ashraf Hendricks, did not concede a goal in any of their four games at the week-long playoffs.

Magesi, as the runners-up, will receive R600 000 for their efforts.

Real Madrid, Bayern FC and La Masia attempting to gain promotion into the National First Division

As reported by Sports Brief, football fans were left almost scratching their heads when they saw the names of the teams participating in the 2021/22 ABC Motsepe League play-offs held in Potchefstroom, North West.

In matches that Sports Brief observed, the likes of Real Madrid, FC Bayern, and Barcelona's La Masia academy were part of nine times from the SAFA Second Division (South Africa's third tier of football) attempting to become a part of just two that will participate in next season's GladAfrica Championship (National First Division).
