The charity game is being planned to raise funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) awareness. It is in honour of a former Barcelona player and assistant coach, Juan Carlos Unzue.

Unzue has a close bond with Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola and so City were chosen as the ideal opponent. He worked as FC Barcelona’s goalkeeping coach from 2003 to 2010, working alongside Pep Guardiola for two years, The Athletic reported.

The game was due to be held last summer, but COVID restrictions in Spain meant that no fans would have been in attendance.

Plans are underway to have the game take place on August 24 at the Nou Camp.

City are scheduled to face Newcastle United on August 20 and Crystal Palace on August 27 in the Premier League, SkySports reported.
