The debate for who the better is between Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and PSG's Lionel Messi continues to linger on, with several footballers having their opinions on the two rivals.

The latest to join the fray is legendary AC Milan forward Marco Van Basten who seemed to have settled the argument after claiming Messi is better than Ronaldo.

According to the Dutch icon, anyone that thinks the Portuguese captain is better than the Argentine skipper knows nothing about football.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, quoted by Daily Mail, Van Basten said:

'Cristiano is a great player, but those who say he is better than Messi know nothing about football, or they are saying it in bad faith.'

'Messi is one of a kind. Impossible to imitate and impossible to repeat. A player like him comes along every 50 or 100 years. As a kid, he fell into the football genius pot.'

Messi and Ronaldo have been compared for years in the debate of who is the best player in the world as they gone head-to-head in their glittering careers.

The two are almost impossible to split when it comes to goals, honours and assists, with Messi winning seven Ballon d'Or honours while Ronaldo can boast of five.

Sports Brief earlier reported that Marco van Basten has snubbed Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi in his list of top three greatest footballers of all time with Cristiano Ronaldo also not named.
