Football fans were left almost scratching their heads when they saw the names of the teams participating in the 2021/22 ABC Motsepe League play-offs held in Potchefstroom, North West.
In matches that Sports Brief observed, the likes of Real Madrid, FC Bayern, and Barcelona's La Masia academy were part of nine times from the SAFA Second Division (South Africa's third tier of football) attempting to become a part of just two that will participate in next season's GladAfrica Championship (National First Division).
In reality, Real Madrid is from Kimberley, having won the Northern Cape SAFA division, Bayern FC being the champions of the Mpumalanga stream, and La Masia Academy (MM Platinum), which was victorious in Gauteng.
In March, Sports Brief detailed the names of interesting and strange names South African football teams have come to be known for.
As reported by iDiski Times, Bayern drew 1-1 with Summerfield Dynamos (KwaZulu-Natal), La Masia drew 0-0 with Dikwena United (Free State) and Real was defeated 3-1 by Magesi FC (Limpopo). According to FARPost, the winners of the two semifinals - guaranteed a place in the GladAfrica Championship - will meet in the final to decide the overall winner of the division on Sunday afternoon.
