Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso has given insight into the culture in the club's senior squad, which has seen it slide into mediocrity.

The 33-year-old is a free agent following the club's decision to release several players as it looks to address a seven-year-long drought without any trophies, under new coach Arthur Zwane. Cardoso made over 200 appearances for the Amakhosi, scoring 13 goals but losing in four finals in his time in Naturena.

According to IOL, Cardoso said to broadcaster Robert Marawa on his programme Marawa Sports Worldwide:

"The biggest downfall for the period I was there was the quality of signings. You bring in NFD players and free agents, they're passionate yes but some of them just want to earn a salary. You can see it on the field and some players just arrive to training under the influence of alcohol.

"I hope they can fix it, they have the finances and can be a great force of football again and I hope they end their seven year drought for trophies."

Cardoso also added that it being out in public and interacting with Chiefs supporters became increasingly awkward for him as the club slid into mediocrity, saying:

"Fans must understand that we are also human beings and if we don't get positivity out of anything it can take its toll on us mentally and physically."

Dumisani Zuma's controversial stay at Kaizer Chiefs has come to a somewhat unsurprising end.

As reported by Sports Brief, the club announced earlier today that it had decided to part ways with the 27-year-old midfielder, having placed him on suspension with a year still left on his contract.

The past season had proved rather difficult for him at Naturena.
