  • Spain secured their first win in the Nations League after deservedly edging Switzerland 1-0 on Thursday, June 9
  • Pablo Sarabia scored the only goal of the game as Luis Enrique’s dominant side narrowly escaped a VAR review, which allowed the goal to stand
  • The win means Spain now have five points from three games in group A2

Spain finally got their first win of the ongoing Nations League as they edged Switzerland 1-0 in a fairly one-sided encounter on Thursday.

Pablo Sarabia did well to slide in Marcos Llorente’s cross to score a goal which was subject to review by the Video Assisted Referee.

The goal, scored in the 13th was eventually allowed to stand and it proved to be the winner as Switzerland struggled to create solid chances.

With the win, Spain moved to five points in group A2, two behind arch-rivals Portugal

Late in the game, however, Breel Embolo had a chance but lobbed his shot wide, while Djibril Sow saw his volley blocked by a sturdy Spain defence.

Gavi, the stand out performer

Sarabia might have been the one who got the all-important goal for Spain, but one player certainly left a mark in the game – Barcelona star Gavi.

Having come from Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, Gavi is fast becoming one of the hottest midfield prospects in world football, and he once again showed his worth against Switzerland.

One stand out moment came in the first half, when Gavi got the ball in his side’s box from a Swiss attack.

Typically, one is expected to clear the ball to diffuse the danger, but the 17-year old showed immense confidence to flick the ball over Xherdan Shaqiri's head before dancing round two other Switzerland players to eventually win his side a free kick.

Portugal extend unbeaten run with win over Czech Republic

In the other game on Thursday, Portugal extended their unbeaten run in the UEFA Nations League following their 2-0 comfortable win over the Czech Republic on Thursday night, June 9.

Bernado Silva staged a man-of-the-match performance as he bagged a brace of assists to inspire his side to victory

The Selecao went into the clash off a fine run of form, having won once and drawn once in two of their Group B fixtures.
