  • Black Stars youngster Felix Afena-Gyan was the subject of constant criticism following Ghana's 1-1 draw with the Central African Republic in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers
  • Afena-Gyan, who opened his goalscoring account for the Black Stars against Madagascar, was a pale shadow of himself as Ghana threw away an early lead to share the spoils with the Wild Beast
  • Despite playing out a one-all draw, the four-time African champions sit at the summit of Group E with a better goal difference than closest rivals, Angola

Football can be ruthless and to a more considerable extent cruel at times regardless of the subject matter involved.

After being singled out for unending praise by fans, AS Roma teen sensation Felix Afena-Gyan has been the centre of serious scrutiny following his sub-par performance against the Central Africa Republic.

Just like Ghana's opening 2023 AFCON qualifiers against the Barea of Madagascar, the 19-year-old Europa Conference League winner was handed a starting berth against the Central Africa Republic in game two of the qualifiers.

However, Afena-Gyan could not replicate his heroics against the Central Africa Republic on Sunday afternoon as Ghana shared the spoils with the Wild Beast in a one-all draw.

After the game, Ghanaian football fans, who are arguably the most demanding set of football supporters across the globe, did not mince their words in registering their displeasure with the youngster's seemingly quiet outing.

He was eventually replaced by Holstein Kiel forward Kwasi Okyere-Wriedt with five minutes left on the clock.

Below are some of the reactions from Ghanaian soccer fans:

Legendary Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan jumps to the defence of underfire young forward Afena-Gyan

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan has defended the performance of forward Felix Afena-Gyan despite his quiet display against the Central African Republic.

The 19-year-old, who scored and provided an assist in the game against Madagascar in midweek, was largely absent in Sunday's match in Angola.

In a reply on Twitter, the legendary forward responded to a post referring the forward to bulk up if he is to play as a lone striker.
