  • Asamoah Gyan has jumped to the defence of young Black Stars forward Felix Afena-Gyan following his performance against Central African Republic
  • The 19-year-old was far from his best as the Black Stars were held by Central African Republic in the AFCON qualifiers
  • Ghana top Group E of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after two games following Angola's draw with Madagascar

Former Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan has defended the performance of forward Felix Afena-Gyan despite his quite display against the Central African Republic.

The 19-year-old, who scored and provided an assist in the game against Madagascar in midweek, was largely absent in Sunday's match in Angola.

In a reply on Twitter, the legendary forward responded to a post referring the forward to bulk up if he is to play as a lone striker.

"If Felix Afena-Gyan is going to keep playing as a lone striker for the Ghana he might have to consider dieting and weights so he bulks up a bit more. Playing upfront alone means he needs improve his hold up play and make the ball stick. That comes with experience and strength," wrote Owuraku Ampofo, a Ghanaian journalist.

However, Gyan feels the AS Roma youngster was good on the day but midfielders failed to give him the necessary supplies.

Asamoah Gyan responded: "He is doing some good things upfront. His hold up play is not bad. All the team need to do is to have confidence in him and supply the balls anytime he makes a run through channels. Striker gives up when he runs a lot and there there is no supply. Midfielders have to take risk."

Asamoah Gyan is currently unattached since leaving Ghana Premier League outfit Legon Cities in 2021.

Felix Afena-Gyan scores maiden Black Stars goal against Madagascar

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Felix Afena Gyan has netted his first international goal for Ghana as they lead Madagascar 2-0 in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game on Wednesday.

The AS Roma forward connected to Gideon Mensah's ball to give Ghana a second goal at the Cape Coast Stadium.

It took the 19-year-old striker three games to score his debut goal for the four-time African champions.
