Algeria Legend and 1990 AFCON Winner Sentenced to Jail for Corruption

African football legend and former Algeria international Rabah Madjer has been sentenced to jail for corrupt and fraudulent activities.

The 1990 Africa Cup of Nations winner has been found guilty of corruption by an Algerian court and will serve 18 months in prison.

According to Pulse, the ex-footballer was involved in fraudulent practices with a business partner, using a newspaper they owned as a cover up.

The court also fined the 1987 African footballer of the year an amount of 100,000 Algerian Dinar along with 4 million dinar compensation being requested by ANEP.

The National Publishing and Advertising Agency (ANEP) initiated a civil action against the former player for using his defunct newspaper Al Balagh to cash in on advertisement.

It was revealed that even after the newspaper folded up, the man continued to profit off it illegally.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Algeria Football Federation (AFF) president Sharafeddine Emara has resigned after his country failed to qualify for the World Cup.

The Desert Warriors beat Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg and lost the second leg 2-1, losing the tie on the away goals rule. But the manner in which they lost the second leg.

Algerian striker, Islam Slimani, had two goals chalked off, one due to an offside and one due to a handball decision.

Referee Bakary Gassama has finally broken his silence after the controversial World Cup play-off between the Algeria and Cameroon in Algiers.

The Gambian referee had to make several tough calls as Cameroon left it late to defeat Algeria in front of their fans and qualify for the World Cup.
