Algeria Football Federation President Resigns Following Cameroon Defeat

Algeria Football Federation (AFF) president Sharafeddine Emara has resigned after his country failed to qualify for the World Cup.

The Desert Warriors beat Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg and lost the second leg 2-1, losing the tie on the away goals rule. But the manner in which they lost the second leg.

Algerian striker, Islam Slimani, had two goals chalked off, one due to an offside and one due to a handball decision.

The goal was originally allowed to stand, but the decision was overturned by Gassama after he consulted with the Video Assistant Referee.

Algeria would get a goal in the 118th minute, and looked to be heading to the World Cup, but Karl Toko Ekambi scored in the 124th minute to give Cameroon the win.

Algeria have now missed out on the World Cup for the second time in a row after failing to qualify for the 2018 edition of the tournament in Russia.

As a result, AFF president Sharafeddine Emara and the entire board members resigned following their defeat on Tuesday.

Algeria were also eliminated from the group stages of the 2021 AFCON back in January after finishing bottom of their group, collecting just one point in three games.

Algeria Request a Rematch Against Cameroon

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Algeria have become the second team to approach FIFA, requesting a rematch of their World Cup qualifier.

Egypt first announced their intention to approach FIFA requesting a replay, as they were unhappy with the hostile environment in which the second leg was contested against Senegal.

Algeria have now also requested a rematch, asking FIFA that their game against Cameroon be replayed due to the referee’s decisions during the game, KickOff reported.
