Al Ahly’s behaviour after the final of the CAF Champions League has not sat well with Steve Komphela.
Pitso Mosimane’s charges were beaten 2-0 in the final by Wydad Casablanca.
Following their defeat, Al Ahly’s antics were criticised by Komphela during the trophy presentation.
As reported by iDiskiTimes, Al Ahly players were seen removing their runners-up medals before they left the stage. Mamelodi Sundowns’ Komphela took to Twitter to label the scene as disgusting and call it disrespectful.
Some fans have since defended the player’s antics, arguing that numerous players removed their medals over the years, including Ronaldo and Messi.
Other fans have accused Komphela of being a hypocrite after a comment he made about throwing away his medals.
As reported by KickOff in 2018, Komphela said that people won’t find medals in his home because he throws them away.
“I would love to see the players win it for our supporters and, God willing, if all that could be or when that happens, I don’t think you’ll come to my place and see a medal, or whatever, I throw those things away myself,” said at the time.
Fans have taken Komphela’s quote out of context, though.
Komphela made the comment during his time as Kaizer Chiefs coach and was talking about he wanted to win trophies and medals with the club for the supporters and not for his own personal glory.
