Wydad dominated the opening minutes of the final and came close to taking the lead as early as the 10th minute. Guy Mbenza rattled the crossbar.

Wydad, spurred on by a deafening crowd, took the lead thanks to a beautiful long-range effort in the 15th minute. Zouhair El Moutaraji unleased a vicious effort from well outside the box that beat Mohamed El Shanawy.

The goal sent the home crowd wild, making them more raucous than they were before. The noise was so deafening, that players could not even hear the referee’s whistle at times.

Al Ahly started to claw their way back into the game as the half went on, creating more chances. Taher Mohamed had the Egyptian’s first chance but his shot was deflected out for a corner.

Al Ahly had chances to pull a goal back by Wydad were resolute in defence. The captain, Yahya Jabrane, was instrumental in intercepting passes and keeping his side in the lead. The Moroccan side went into the break with a lead and soon doubled it at the start of the second half.

El Moutaraji once again brought the Moroccan fans to their feet and chanting as he fired home from close range. El Moutaraji’s original toe-poked effort was saved by El Shanawy but pushed back into his path and he made no mistake with the second attempt as he blasted it into the top of the net.

Wydad pushed forward for a third as the crowd roared, pushing them forward. Al Ahly never really looked threatening and had spells of possession but did little with it.

Al Ahly’s best attempt came just after 70 minutes when Mohamed Magdy unleashed a powerful effort but it was saved comfortably by Ahmed Tagnaouti. Minutes later, Ali Maâloul blasted over from inside the box.

The Egyptians had chances in the last ten minutes to score and possibly even win the game, but Tagnaouti produced some might saves, including stealing the ball off Percy Tau's toes. The Moroccan side held on to the lead and the victory to be crowned champions of Africa.
