The great Isaac "Shakes" Kungwane passed away on this day, 28 May, eight years ago at the age of 49.

The midfield wizard, famous for his nine-season stay at Kaizer Chiefs, had been battling diabetes at the time of his death. After falling into a two-day-long coma caused by the condition, Shakes never woke up again.

Kungwane became renowned for his uncanny ability of passing the ball one way while looking the other, which confused opponents, to his team's benefit, though he also flummoxed his own teammates at times. He was also admired for his near-supernatural ability of curving the ball prodigious with his doctorate-level left foot, whether it be from corner kicks, free kicks and in open play.

The Fafung-born Kungwane (a township outside the North West town of Brits) came to call Alexandria township his home for most of his life.

During his 16-year-long professional career from 1987 to 2003, Kungwane represented Jomo Cosmos, Milan FC (loan) Kaizer Chiefs, Pretoria City (loan), Manning Rangers, Alexandra United and Uthukela.

He made his international debut on 18 September 1996 in a 2-0 win over Australia coming on as a sub for David Nyathi in the 63rd minute in the Four Nations Cup at the Johannesburg Stadium. He played his last international only 3 days later in a 0-0 against Ghana as a substitute for Thomas Madigage in the 75th minute at Loftus Versfeld.

Shakes enjoyed a successful post-football career as a pundit on SABC and SuperSport. He came to coin the term "Kasi Flava" to describe any skill displayed by a football player at home and abroad.

Kungwane is survived by his wife Busisiwe and three children, Kabelo, Neo and Thato.

On This Day: The great John "Shoes" Moshoeu passes away at the age of 49 in 2015

The 21st of April will forever be a sad one for the South African football fraternity after the death of John "Shoes" Moshoeu on the day in 2015.

The legendary former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder had been battling with cancer when he died.

He will always be remembered as a crucial figure in South Africa's African Cup of Nations victory in 1996.
