Veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic's career could be over as he is facing eight months on the sidelines following knee surgery.

The development was confirmed by newly-crowned Italian champions, AC Milan, who revealed the star forward had a procedure to repair damage and instability caused by a previous anterior cruciate ligament injury.

"AC Milan announces that Zlatan Ibrahimovic underwent an operation on his left knee carried out by Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, with the club's medical director Stefano Mazzoni in attendance, at the Hospital Jean Mermoz in Lyon," AC Milan said in a statement posted on their website.
"The arthroscopy had been planned for a while to definitively resolve the joint's instability through the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral reinforcement and meniscus reparation. The operation was a complete success and the prognosis is estimated between seven and eight months," the statement continued.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's future at AC Milan is up in the air

According to the Daily Mail, Ibrahimovic could be out for the rest of the year as he fights to regain his fitness.

The publication added that the 40-year-old's current contract with Milan is set to expire this summer, and it now remains unclear if the Serie A giants will extend his deal.

The former Man United attacker played a central role in Milan's Serie A triumph as he scored eight league goals to help his side win the domestic crown for the first time in more than a decade.

Ex-Chelsea duo inspire AC Milan to Serie A triumph

Earlier, Sports Brief reported the pair of Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori played a crucial role in AC Milan's Serie A title triumph.

The former Chelsea players were in action on Sunday, May 22, as Milan demolished Sassuolo 3-0 to win the Italian title.

Giroud scored a brace during the clash to inspire Stefano Pioli's charges to victory at the Mapei Stadium.

The Frenchman joined AC Milan last summer after quitting Chelsea where he had spent four years.
