FootballMamelodi Sundowns Target Win in Final DStv Premiership Match Against Royal AM for Crowning Moment With Trophy
- Mamelodi Sundowns striker Pavol Sarvanko says that the DStv Premiership champions are aiming to sign off the league campaign with a victory over Royal AM
- The Brazilians were there in body but not in mind during an embarrassing 3-0 to Stellenbosch FC last weekend
- With the Nedbank Cup final to prepare for next weekend, Sundowns need to build momentum for it after idling along since sealing a fifth consecutive league weeks ago
Mamelodi Sundowns wants its crowning 2021/22 DStv Premiership campaign moment to be underlined with a victory in the final round of matches this weekend.
The all-conquering champions will be presented with the trophy this Saturday after their match against Royal AM in Durban. Their Slovakian striking import Pavol Safranko intends for the moment to not be a bittersweet one with rare consecutive defeats.
Sundowns suffered its biggest loss of the campaign last Saturday when the team was unexpectedly thumped 3-0 by Stellenbosch FC in Tshwane, a scoreline most observers agree flattered them as it could have been far worse.
Safranko said to SowetanLIVE that the Brazilians will celebrate a 14th Premier Soccer League trial in style, adding:
“I’m sure Royal AM will not be an easy opponent, but what is in our DNA is to win that game. We will try to do our best and I came here to score goals and I will try to score as many as I can to help the team.
“Their defence is quite good, physical and strong. Even when we played them in the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup, they gave us a tough time. But we have to keep the focus on ourselves and I believe we can beat them.”
Co-coach Rulani Mokwena was in agreement with Safranko, saying:
“After a headache of losing so heavily, we are now focusing on Royal AM. That's going to be a difficult match. We saw when we went there to play them in the cup, it was difficult for us to get a result.
Black Stars winger Kamaldeen Sulemana laments about frustrating injury ordeal
Football“So we have to focus all our attention on that... and this week we trained like a team that lost 3-0 to try and work hard for the remaining two games.”
Besides the pageantry that comes with winning against Thwihli Thwahla, it is in the team's best interest that it generates momentum going into the Nedbank Cup final on 28 May against Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.
