Eintracht Frankfurt are the new champions of the 2022 UEFA Europa League, with Champions League football the prize for the team.

The Germans defeated Rangers FC 5-4 on penalties after the tie ended 1-1 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium in Seville. The Gers opened the scoring via Englishman Joe Aribo in the 57th minute, before Colombian Rafael Santos Borre equalised 12 minutes later in the 69th minute.

After Welshman Aaron Ramsey had his penalty saved by man-of-the-match Kevin Trapp, Santos Borre stepped up to blast the ball past Allan McGregor and send what was a quarter of the stadium into delirium.

The cup win was Die Adler's second in the competition's history, having first done so in the 1979-80 season. The last team from Germany to win the tournament before tonight was Schalke 04 in 1997, when they defeated Inter Milan 4-1 on penalties after the two-legged final ended 1-1.

The Gers had to swallow a second loss in a Europa League final in 14 years, having lost to Zenit St Petersburg in 2008. This is the first time a team from Scotland has been in the competition's final since 'The Gers' rivals Glasgow Celtic in 2003, where they lost 3-2 to Jose Mourinho's FC Porto. No team from Scotland has won the competition in its various iterations.

Rangers fans kicked off flight on the way to Europa League final, another sets up Tinder profile to get there

Getting to the Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers in Seville or finding accommodation has proven to be an interesting experience for a group of separate 'The Gers' fans.

As reported on Sports Brief, in the first instance, six of them were thrown off a Seville-bound Ryanair plane.

They are believed to have behaved rowdily as the aircraft was headed to the south of Europe.
