Cristopher Nkunku has capped off a wonderful season by winning the Bundesliga player of the year award. The RB Leipzig forward beat a star-studded field with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland to win the individual gong.
Nkunku has enjoyed a stellar campaign with Leipzig, scoring 20 goals in 34 appearances. He helped the German side to a fourth-place finish. He also recorded 13 assists to become the first player to reach double digits this season.
The official Bundesliga site also reports that He was also similarly effective in Leipzig’s European campaign, getting 11 goals and three assists in the Champions League and the Europa League. The French forward bagged a hat trick against Manchester City in the group stages in one of his standout performances.
The 24-year-old won four player of the month awards all season. It is the first time in the Bundesliga history to have a player win the monthly award on four separate occasions in a single season.
Nkunku will have a chance to land silverware with Leipzig when they play Freiburg in the DFB Pokal final on May 21st. He has had six goal involvements in Leipzig’s runup to the final.
Lewandowski refuses to extend his Bayern Munich contract
Meanwhile, Sports Brief had earlier reported that Robert Lewandowski had rejected calls from Bayern Munich to sign a new contract.
Lewandowski is said to have reiterated his desire to leave Bayern at the end of his current contract which expires next season.
Barcelona are said to be the frontrunners to land the Polish striker who is regarded as one of the best strikers in football.
Nkunku looking to move away from RB Leipzig

FootballAt the same time, Nkunku is also angling for a move away after a breakthrough season for him. Nkunku is currently tied to Leipzig until 2024.
Sports Brief recently reported that Chelsea had inquired about the possibility of signing Nkunku in this transfer window. The Blues have attacking problems and Thomas Tuchel sees the former Paris Saint Germain striker as an answer.
Leipzig will however be hoping to convince Nkunku to stay for at least another season as they compete in the UEFA Champions League once again.
