FootballGhanaian Defender Phil Ofosu Ayeh Explains Why He Snubbed Germany for Ghana
- Former Wolverhampton Wanderers Phil Ofosu-Ayeh has revealed why he opted to represent Ghana ahead of Germany
- Phil completed his switch seven years ago before making his debut for the Black Stars in a friendly game against Canada
- The 30-year-old defender whose career has been plagued by niggling injuries currently plays for Swedish lower-tier side Halmstads BK
German-born Ghanaian full-back Phil Ofosu-Ayeh has lifted the lid on what inspired his change of nationality.
Born in Moers, Germany the right-back opted to play for Ghana ahead of his country of birth and has since been capped once by the West African nation.
Ofosu-Ayeh's maiden appearance for the Black Stars came in 2015 when Ghana crossed swords with Canada in an international friendly, which ended 1-1.
Explaining the rationale behind his change of nationality Ofosu-Ayeh, who currently plays for Halmstads BK, hinted he was drawn by the country's 'mad love' for the sport.
“I think when I see the culture in Germany and Ghana, football is so much for the people in Ghana. The excitement is crazy for the people in Ghana and I wanted to be a part of it." Phil told Happy FM as quoted by Football Ghana.
“To make people happy. I choose Ghana and it’s so much more. When I had my first invitation in 2015, I felt that. We played Comoros Island at home; the stadium was full but I didn’t even play. I saw the faces of people”
“It was the best experience for me. I just hope to get back to the big stage. I will say it’s one of the best in my career”
“It is always an honour to represent your country. Not everybody gets that opportunity. I remember when we played against Canada in Washington it was an amazing feeling and I will keep that in my mind forever”. He ended.
