- The 23-year old Spaniard was voted the Brighton player of the season by fans after a stellar campaign
- In his acceptance speech, Cucurella struggled with English, leading to a hilarious request to the Brighton boss Graham Potter
Brighton and Hove Albion star Marc Cucurella recently left fans in stitches after begging his coach to leave him on the bench next season so he can avoid making public speeches in English.
Cucurella was named the Men's Players' Player of the Season as well as the Supporters' Player of the Season in Brighton’s recent gala occasion thanks to his heroics for the Seagulls this campaign.
His speech had a delightful moment as he struggled to make out some English words, to the laughter of the audience in attendance.
As he collected his two awards, Cucurella, in the presence of Jules Breach, could barely complete a coherent English sentence, which is understandable considering the fact that he is a Spanish native.
But one sentence that certainly made sense and sent the crowd to laughter was his message to Graham Potter.
“Ey, gaffer, next season put me on the bench - I don’t like speaking English!" he said.left-back
The 23-year old has been instrumental for Brighton in his debut season for the club, and has mainly played in the left back position.
Along with the rest of the teammates, Brighton as a unit has been an impressive side, and currently sits in the top half of the table.
While speaking to the club’s website, Cucurella thanked fans for voting for him, describing his feat as ‘amazing’.
"It is amazing, not possible in my first season here in this league. Thank you for everyone who voted for me, the teammates and the fans.”
