  • A club in France is under investigation over a bizarre case of matchfixing after winning a game 22-1
  • The team needed an overhaul of 9 goals to beat their rivals on goal difference
  • After their suspicious win, the league nullified the result and they might be subjected to playing the fixture again

A seventh tier club in France is under investigation over alleged match fixing after winning a game 22-1 to spring to the top of the table.

The club in question, AC Arles, needed to beat their opponents AC Septemes by a huge margin to be able to leapfrog their rivals FC Martigues at the top of the table.

And that is exactly what happened, as AC Arles, which plays in the second division of the Méditerranée regional league thrashed their opponents 22-1 in suspicious circumstances.

Notably, this was the penultimate game of the season and the result meant Arles finished the campaign top of the pile as they went level on ponts with FC Martigues but with a far superior goal difference.

But their joy was short-lived as The Sun reports that the league has since stripped them of the victory, and an investigation over match fixing is underway.

“I have asked my services to refer the matter to the regional disciplinary commission in order to open a file of suspicion of fraud with an investigation.” Ligue Méditerranée president Eric Borghini said.

The goal turnover was very suspicious, especially because AC Arles have not been particularly prolific in front of goal this season.

In the 20 league games so far, the club has managed to score 52 goals.

As per the Ligue Méditerranée website, the result has been rendered null and AC Arles remain three points behind the league leaders with and a further nine goals behind in terms of goal difference.

Because of the nullification, the game against AC Septemes might have to be replayed.

AC Arles also risks hefitier punishment if investigations conclude and the club is found guilty of match fixing.
