FootballTummy Bug To Blame for University of Pretoria Dropping Points to Cape Town Spurs in GladAfrica Championship
A stomach bug has been blamed for the University of Pretoria dropping points in the GladAfrica Championship over the weekend.
AmaTuks drew 2-2 with Shaun Bartlett’s Cape Town Spurs at the Athlone Stadium, a draw that has dented their chances of automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.
Head coach Tlisane Motaung confirmed that the players sought medical assistance the night before the game after taking ill, Sowetan LIVE reported.
“We had supper at the hotel in Cape Town and that night the players were calling the medical staff complaining about stomach bugs, even the technical staff. It was rough. Some players were forced to play under those conditions,” he said.
Motaung added that it was a difficult situation as 70% of the team were suffering from stomach aches during the game. Despite the draw, AmaTuks are still optimistic that they can qualify for automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.
The Pretoria based side will host Hungry Lions in their last game of the season, needing a win to keep their hopes alive. They also need Richards Bay FC to lose against Cape Town Spurs in their final game.
Both Richards Bay and the University of Pretoria were level on 50 points each before their penultimate games. Richards Bay beat TS Sporting while AmaTuks drew, The South African confirmed.
The win saw Richards Bay move up to 53 points while AmaTuks are on 51 points. The Rich Boyz just need a win to secure automatic promotion in the final game but a draw could be good enough as well.
If Richards Bay draw and AmaTuks win, both teams will be level on points and goal difference will decide who takes the top spot.
Jomo Cosmos relegated to ABC Motsepe League, Ezenkosi to play in the amateur leagues after 39 years at the top
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena rubbishes claims that DStv Premiership is a farmers league
FootballIt’s the end of an era in South African football as Jomo Cosmos were officially relegated from the professional football leagues. Ezenkosi have been competing in the professional leagues for 39 years and are one the staples of the South African soccer scene.
The club was relegated to the GladAfrica Championship from the DStv Premiership at the end of the 2015/16 season and has been there ever since. Fans hoped they would return to the DStv Premiership, but the club dwindled.
Cosmos’ fate was sealed when they could only manage a draw with fellow relegation-threatened side, TS Sporting. However, a win would not have helped the side either as Pretoria Callies, the only side Cosmos could have leapfrogged, won their game against Polokwane City.
