Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has sent a plea to Liverpool center-back Joel Matip to revert his decision of not playing for Cameroon as the World Cup in Qatar approaches.
The soon-to-be Inter Milan goalkeeper hopes all players that have boycotted the national team in the past due to personal reasons will comeback ahead of Qatar 2022.
In an interview with CRTV, Onana revealed he has been in contact with some of these players but the decision to play for Cameroon solely lies with them, no matter how much he tries to convince them.
“I am in contact with a few but it remains personal choices. We are still Cameroonians and the most important thing is to bring all these children together to defend Cameroon in the best possible way," he said as quoted by allezleslions.net.
"We are going to the biggest of competitions and all these players who can help Cameroon are welcome. If after Joël and Nico can be there… We play a World Cup, everyone dreams of playing a World Cup. The decision is up to them. I hope they will come and defend Cameroon with us because it will not be easy. We will need everyone," he added.
Cameroon have been drawn in Group G of the World Cup in Qatar alongside five times champions Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia.
