  • PSG beat Angers but will have to wait longer to be crowned champions

Paris Saint Germain will have to wait for one more game week to be crowned French Champions. They beat Angers 3-0 on Wednesday night but needed Marseille to drop points against Nantes for them to attain an unassailable lead at the top of Ligue One.

Dimtri Payet scored twice from the penalty spot to help Marseille beat Nantes 3-2 in a five-goal thriller. PSG will face Lens on Saturday knowing that just a solitary point will be enough to reclaim the title they lost to Lille last season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were without Lionel Messi and Neymar for the Angers fixture. Messi is out with a possible season-ending Achilles Tendon injury while Neymar was serving a suspension for yellow cards accumulated.

Messi will be assessed further by the club physios to determine the gravity of the inflammation on his tendon. The Argentina captain has been a constant figure in PSG’s attack this season, contributing 13 assists in Ligue One.

Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 28th minute before veteran defender Sergio Ramos headed in PSG’s second. Captain Marquinhos rounded up the scoring in the second half. Pochettino’s substitute Edouard Michut was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.

PSG are now up to 77 points from 33 matches while Marseille are on 62 points.

In other results, the race to finish in the top four gathered pace as Strasbourg beat Rennes 2-1. The result takes Strasbourg on level points with both Rennes and Monaco. Rennes are ahead on goal difference in third with Strasbourg and Monaco in fourth and fifth respectively.

Monaco themselves needed an Aleksandr Golovin goal in first half stoppage time to beat Nice at home. Nice are two points behind Monaco.

At the same time, St Etienne and Bordeaux played out to a two-all draw in a battle to survive the chop at the end of the season. The two teams have been embroiled in the relegation battle for the better part of the season.

St Etienne have 31 points, four ahead of Bordeaux in 19th place with five games left to play.
