  • South Africa now knows who it will face as it tries to qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast
  • Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the last edition of the tournament that was held in Cameroon in January and February
  • Already weary of the men's national team's spotty record when it comes to qualifying for major tournaments, Mzansi social media gave its predictable mixed response

With the dust having settled with the draw for the qualifying phase of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, South African football social media has given its thoughts.

Bafana Bafana has been drawn alongside Morocco, Zimbabwe and Liberia in Group K, looking to book a ticket with one of these nations to Ivory Coast next year in July. The men's national football team failed to qualify for this year's edition that was held in Cameroon in January and February.

Mzansi social media has had its predictably mixed response to the draw.

Mahlatse Rikhotso said:

"So we've got Morocco, Zimbabwe, and Libya in the same group? I don't see us qualifying. Already Zimbabwe is playing better football than RSA. And I'm not going to even mention Morocco."

Thuso Sekokotla said:

"Zimbabwe is still suspended, the final verdict will be that of disqualification then Bafana will benefit through the automatic elimination of Zim which we potentially cant beat."

@RSAFutbol said:

"If our best players are selected then we should qualify. Leave politics & favouritism & select the best available SA players overseas & locally"

@LedgerOrigy said:

"If we cnt qualify here lets leave football as a country please"

@Charlie_mavhaga said:

"people only focusing on Zim and Morroco.. Lol i dnt even trust these bunch to get full 6 points from Liberia"

Marthunis Groenewald said:

"It's a professional game, the guys needs to be payed fairly, because they do the job, not the officials."

AFCON 2023 qualifying draw: South Africa face stiff competition as they compete for a spot in the Ivory Coast

Bafana Bafana now knows the task that awaits them as they look to qualify for AFCON 2023.

As reported on Sports Brief, the South African side will face off against Liberia, neighbours Zimbabwe and Morocco.

South Africa are currently ranked 13th in Africa and 69th in the world. Bafana failed to qualify for the previous edition of the AFCON tournament and will be looking to make amends for that disappointment.
