  • The top three slots of the Premier League table remain unchanged as Man City, Liverpool, and Chelsea were all not involved in league action this weekend
  • All the three sides were involved in FA Cup action where Chelsea set up a date with Liverpool in the final as City bowed out
  • There were significant changes in the top-four battle as Man United climbed to fifth after their 3-2 epic win over Norwich, with Arsenal dropping to sixth after losing 1-0 at Southampton

This weekend, the Premier League's top guns were not in action as they were involved in the FA Cup campaign.

Man City and Liverpool - both of who are leading the hunt for the EPL title faced off at Wembley Stadium in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

Chelsea, meanwhile, had to contend with a fixture with Crystal Palace in the same competition thus ruling them out of league action.

Given the circumstances, the top three spots on the EPL standings remain unchanged, with City still topping the log with 74 points, a point ahead of second-placed Liverpool after the same number of matches (31).

The Blues remain third with 62 points after 30 rounds of matches.

Top-four race predicted to go down the wire

With the top three teams not involved in Premier League action, the focus was largely on the top-four race where Tottenham, Man United, and Arsenal are pitted in a fierce battle to secure the final Champions League spot.

United were undoubtedly the biggest gainers from the weekend as they are the only side among the top-four challengers who won their fixture.

Both Tottenham and Arsenal dropped points, with the latter being silenced 1-0 by Brighton on Saturday, April 16.

The Gunners, on the other hand, suffered a 1-0 painful loss to Southampton, with the result seeing them drop to sixth with 54 points.

United sit fifth with 54 points after their 3-2 thrilling win over Norwich at Old Trafford but have a superior goal difference against Arsenal who have a match in hand.

Despite their defeat, Tottenham remain fourth on the log with 57 points, three ahead of both Arsenal and Man United.

Relegation battle taking shape

In the relegation battle, Norwich City, Watford, and Burnley all dropped points in their respective fixtures to suffer a massive blow in their survival hope.

The Canaries remain bottom of the table with 21 points, while Burnley are just three points off safety after they played out a 1-1 draw with West Ham.

As such, Everton, who are one place off the relegation zone will be desperate to secure a favourable result when they take on Leicester on Wednesday, April 20, to increase their survival chances.

Ajax chief confirms Erik ten Hag's Man United appointment

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Ajax technical director Gerry Hamstra has suggested Erik ten Hag's move to Old Trafford is imminent.

Ten Hag is a clear frontrunner for the United job after outfoxing PSG's Mauricio Pochettino from the race for the job.

It is understood that the Ajax boss already has an agreement with United to take charge at the Manchester club at the end of the season.
