Senate Summons Sports Minister, NFF President Over Stadium Mayhem During World Cup Clash vs Ghana

• Amaju Pinnick and Sunday Dare have been summoned by the Nigerian Senate over the fracas that ensued at the Moshood Abiola Stadium
• Shortly after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, angry fans were seen vandalising the facility
• The Senate has ordered that the NFF President, Sports Minister and other agencies in charge of the stadium maintenance appear before it

The Nigerian Senate has summoned the NFF President Amaju Pinnick and Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, to appear before it over vandalisation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Irate fans, as well as hoodlums, ripped apart the facility shortly after Ghana picked up the World Cup ticket at the expense of Nigeria.

Having played a goalless draw in Kumasi, victory would have taken Nigeria to the global showpiece, but the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw as Ghana qualified courtesy of the away goal rule.

And shortly after the final whistle in Abuja, fans stormed the pitch and were captured ripping everything apart, while other valuables were carted away.

Soon after, news filtered the media space that CAF doctor Joseph Kabungo had died within the stadium, but the NFF has denied claims that he was beaten by irate fans.

The Nation reports that the Senate has now summoned all agencies involved in the maintenance of the stadium.

The resolutions were sequel to a Point of Order raised by Sen. Michael Nnachi (PDP-Ebonyi) during yesterday’s plenary.

The Senate also mandated its committee on Sports and Youth Development to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the failure of the Eagles to qualify for the World Cup in spite of the numerous government support.

Supporting the motion, Senator Abba Moro said it was a very sad day for Nigeria.

“It is sad that Nigerians vented their anger and frustration on the physical stadium.

“There is an urgent need for this Senate, if possible, to intervene to see that our stadia across Nigeria are properly structured and made in such a way that future occurrence or fans invading the pitch or destroying the stadium will be prevented."

Body of the late CAF official arrives Zambia

Sports Brief earlier reported that the body of the late CAF doping officer, Dr Joseph Kabungo, who died after Nigeria's World Cup play-off against Ghana in Abuja has been returned to his family in Zambia.

Kabungo died moments after the game at the Moshood Abiola Stadium following a cardiac arrest.

In a video posted on Twitter, spotted by Sports Brief, the family, members of the Zambian Football Federation were at the airport to receive his body.
