Mamelodi Sundowns aren’t just aiming to be the best team in South Africa, they’re aiming to be one of the best teams in the world.
Masandawana have been levels above the other sides in South Africa of late and their domination looks set to continue.
The club underlined their ambition by appointing Flemming Berg as their new Sporting Director, Sport24 reported. Berg is a former Chelsea international scout and has been helping develop talent for the Danish national team since 2015.
His work with the Danish FA has contributed in part to the country climbing up the FIFA rankings in recent years. Denmark have jumped up from 46th in the FIFA Rankings to 9th in the five years that he was with the Football Association.
Sundowns released a statement on their website in which Mamelodi Sundowns Chairperson, Tlhopane Motsepe, detailed why they brought Berg to the club.
“There are numerous reasons why we chose to bring Flemming to the Yellow Nation. One of the most important reasons is that he understands that Mamelodi Sundowns has a responsibility to its most important partner – our supporters. He understands that it is our responsibility to play entertaining, inspiring and winning football.
“The Sporting Director also understands that Mamelodi Sundowns is not just a football club, we are a South African footballing institution and that we have a duty to our country, Motsepe said.”
Berg also expressed his excitement at having joined The Brazilians.
“It is a great honor to be here and to be given the possibility to work with this fantastic club. The history and culture are in many ways overwhelming. I am so proud, and I am looking forward to taking the position as Sporting Director for Mamelodi Sundowns,” he said.
