  • Right Honorable Alban Bagbin believes Kwesi Nyantakyi's downfall is directly linked to the downward spiral of football in Ghana
  • The Speaker of Parliament adds that the unfortunate crucifixion of the former GFA president has caused serious damage to football in the country and it will take a lot of time before the West African nation returns to the summit once again
  • Nyantakyi is currently serving a 12-year ban from all football-related activities after he was caught receiving cash gifts in an exposé

Ghana's Speaker of parliament, Right Honorable Alban Bagbin has attributed the downward trajectory of football in the West African nation to the fall of former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Kwesi Nyantakyi, who held various positions in both Ghanaian and African football, was captured receiving cash gifts in a documentary shot by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in 2018.

Owing to the damning nature of the exposé, Nyantakyi resigned from his positions held at CAF and FIFA in conjunction with suffering a lifetime ban in line with FIFA's bribery and corruption rules.

His fall from grace has been attributed to a well-hatched plan to evacuate him from his positions at the domestic and international levels; a stance Nyantakyi agrees with.

Making meaning of the interwoven nature of perceived football decline and the downfall of Nyantakyi, Rt. Hon. Bagbin reckons it is not a coincidence but the growth being experienced in the football sector was inextricably linked to Kwesi Nyantakyi.

"When we were able to bring down Kwesi Nyantakyi, we also brought down Ghana football. That’s one of the brightest spots at FIFA." The speaker of parliament told Tv3.
"When I met the Executives of FIFA and said I was the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, they said what happened? Why did you people do that?"
He was a dynamic addition. The value that he carried at their meetings. He was highly respected, he was very influential and Ghana football was up there. We thought we were handling Nyantakyi but we didn’t know we were handling the whole of Ghana." He ended.

Nyantakyi throws light on Ghana's famous 6-1 thrashing of Egypt in 2013

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi has opened up on the country's famous World Cup qualifier victory against Egypt in 2013.

Ghana thrashed the seven times African champions 6-1 in the first leg of the play-offs to the 2014 World Cup in Kumasi, making the second leg just a mere formality.

In an interview with Onua TV, Nyantakyi explained he was sure of victory but the final result came to him as a shock.
