  • Coach Kwesi Appiah was the first Ghanaian trainer to qualify the Black Stars for the FIFA World Cup
  • Despite a difficult group in the upcoming edition of the global showpiece, Appiah insists Ghana's group opponents are beatable
  • Ghana plays Portugal in their first game before they face South Korea and Uruguay in their second and third games respectively

Erstwhile Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah is highly optimistic that Ghana can reach the knockout phase of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana made a return to the Mundial after missing out on the last edition when the Black Stars upstaged West African neighbours Nigeria over two legs.

The Black Stars have been drawn in a difficult group featuring Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, Asian giants the Korea Republic and two-time World champions Uruguayin Group H.

Sharing his thoughts on Ghana's group, Appiah raised a number of pointers that the technical team should consider before the Mundial kicks off in November

“We should be asking ourselves questions. Can we qualify for this group? If we can, what’s next? This is where it becomes tough. We should psyche ourselves that no matter who we play, we can beat them and will qualify from this group," he said on Accra based Starr FM as quoted by Football Ghana.
He further added that “the most important thing is to have visuals of our opponents to determine their tactical play. That’s one way of having an advantage over them. It’s unfortunate we didn’t have a good tournament in Cameroon (AFCON 2021), however, with the right decisions I’m convinced we will qualify."

Appiah, who led the Black Stars to the 2014 edition reckons with adequate preparations all the group opponents are beatable.

“We’ve got some time before the World Cup. This is the time to move the team forward and prepare well. For me, I think all the teams are beatable and we can go through easily but the most important thing is the preparations towards each game”, he concluded.

Kwesi Appiah commends Otto Addo-led Black Stars technical team

Ex-Ghana head coach Kwesi Appiah has commended the four-man Black Stars technical team on the back of securing a World Cup berth.

Ghana assembled a four-man technical team comprising former international Otto Addo, ex-Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton, Mas-ud Didi Dramani and former Dutch player of Ghanaian heritage George Boateng for the World Cup play-offs.

And the decision to assemble the four tacticians by the Ghana Football Association paid off in grand style when they led the Black Stars to World Cup qualification last night.
