  • Spain is the country with the highest number of players in Europe’s top five leagues
  • In Africa, Senegal tops the list of countries with the most players in the top 5 European leagues
  • Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Morocco and Ivory Coast also make the top 25 overall countries with players in Europe’s strongest leagues

An interesting survey has revealed the countries that have the most football players gracing the top 5 leagues in Europe.

The FBref portal, a website specializing in different types of surveys, recently found that Spain is the country with the most players playing high-level football.

If the data is anything to go by, Spaniards are unrivalled in terms of players playing in the top 5 leagues, with a massive 517 footballers currently in the strongest leagues in Europe.

This is closely followed by French football players (451) and the Italians (346).

Despite the high level of the English Premier League, there are actually more Germans in Europe’s top five leagues (284), than English players (275).

How about African Nations?

Interestingly enough, Africa is quite well represented in terms of players playing in the strongest leagues.

Notably, Senegal boasts the highest number of players in the top 5 leagues among African countries, with 51 players, a number that puts the country among the top 10 in the list.

Next in the African list is Ivory Coast, which has 35 players in the leagues, a number which puts them 17th overall.

Ivory Coast is closely followed by Morocco (21st - 29), Nigeria (23rd - 28), Mali (24th - also 28) and Ghana (25th - 27).

It is kind to note that the number of players includes those that are official members of clubs in the top five leagues, despite the fact that they have been loaned out to teams which are non-top-five leagues.

Egypt requests rematch against Senegal

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported of how Egypt intends to approach FIFA to request a rematch against Senegal.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) originally filed a complaint with FIFA and CAF over the treatment they received from Senegalese fans, and are now planning to take it one step further.

According to reports, the Pharaohs were unhappy with the treatment they received as their team bus was attacked by an angry mob and their players were racially abused by fans.
