  • The 41-year-old came to global attention after his refereeing during a 2022 FIFA World Cup CONMEBOL zone qualifier between Uruguay and Peru

Brazilian referee Anderson Daronco is currently the talk of the football world as photos of him continue doing the rounds on social media.

The tall and heavily well-built 44-year-old made the news after his controversial handling of a recent world cup qualifier between Uruguay and Peru in the CONMEBOL zone.

According to Sport Bible, Peru was trailing 1-0 this past Thursday in Montevideo when Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet held Miguel Trauco's shot in the 95th minute of the match. Rochet, holding the ball at arm's length, then stepped backwards into the net because of momentum.

The whole circumference appeared to have crossed the line to the naked eye, but Daronco did not award it, not even consulting with the video assistant referee (VAR).

Regardless, many football watchers joked that he was not the referee to be trifled with by players who disputed his decision. There was even a photo of physically imposing Brazilian footballer Hulk remonstrating with Daronco, which showed their size disparity.

YouTube channel Soccer Stories – Oh My Goal reported that Daronco has 44cm biceps. He is also apparently referred to in Brazil as 'Juiz Fortao', translating to 'Strong Judge'.

"This is Anderson Daronco, Brazilian referee. If he gave you a yellow or red card, you’d just agree with him."

@bpasports said:

"Meet Brazilian referee Anderson Daronco. This man would definitely have every player maintaining their cool when he is officiating."
