Former Bafana Bafana captain and defender Aaron Mokoena - the most capped men's international player in South African history - led the chorus of angered locals who were displeased with what they said after the match.

'Mbazo' told Soccer Laduma:

"How do you want to take pictures when we've been beaten 5-0? It's unacceptable, absolutely unacceptable. We used to feel horrible when we lost 1-0. You have been hammered 5-0 and the cameras are on you and you are wearing South African national colours. From the outside, it's like you don't care. That's how I looked at it. I felt like our boys did not care"
"I used to feel ashamed to exchanged jerseys with a country that had beaten us. I would rather do it in the dressing or he would rather come to me and ask to exchange. We are not a mickey mouse country. We are representing South Africa and then you appear taking pictures. What is that?"

Ordinary fans were also in an unforgiving mood.

@DrPhomolo said:

"So these Bafana Bafana players went to France to take selfies? No wonder they were humiliated."

@CameronKendall said:

"At this point, Bafana Bafana are nothing but influencers when they go to Europe. Eiffel Tower candids, selfies with Mbappe, videos for the IG story... was the entire point of the trip. Shem. We love our guys, but that was the most disappointing thing I have ever witnessed."

Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela says 5-0 defeat to France was embarrassing

Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela was brutal in his assessment of South Africa's crushing 5-0 defeat by France last night.

As reported by Sports Brief, Mphela described the loss in Lille at the Stade Pierre Mauroy as an embarrassment.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice , while Olivier Giroud, Wissam Ben Yedder and Matteo Guendouzi also chipped in to ensure South Africa's joint-heaviest defeat since being readmitted into international football in 1992.
