  • South African football continued to reel at news that Amazulu had sacked coach Benni McCarthy
  • After an excellent start at the club in late 2020 where he led Usuthu to a second place finish, the second season blues struck McCarthy and his charges
  • Football observers immediately started speculating about his next club, with the Soweto giants mentioned either jokingly or seriously

South African football was left in a state of shock as coach Benni McCarthy was shown the door by Amazulu earlier today.

Benni joined the KwaZulu-Natal based side in December 2020 and led them to second spot in the DStv Premiership. When he joined the club, they were languishing in 13th, iDiski Times reported. Benni also led the team to their first CAF Champions League campaign.

This season has been a different story, though, as AmaZulu have drawn 14 games and sit in ninth position. The record for most draws in a season is 20 and belongs to Swallows FC.

Football fans immediately started speculating about the 44-year-old McCarthy's future.

"The audacity... Amazulu will never sniff Champions League again...This man took them To second place. I want him at Pirates. He will be aggressive. He won't sugarcoat nothing. Pirates need that now... Ncikazi is too nice on these players."

@NormanMerafe said:

"Please Mr McCarthy come to Chiefs and demand long term contract...we need your services really bad ❤️&✌"

@MoetiPhuting responded:

"No not Chiefs please. Arthur is best qualified than him in all respects. This one is a 'one-season wonder' coach. Usemanzi emva kwendlebe"

"Orlando Pirates can be a great destination for Benni. It's about time'

"Usuthu took an irrational decision here! Benni made the team tick. A couple of games could have changed the team's position on the log considering that their form is not that POOR!!!"

Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy dismisses second season blues curse, says local players have 'mentality' problem

Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy is unbothered by seemingly fickle claims that he is a 'one-season wonder' wherever he coaches.

As reported by Sports Brief, Usuthu is experiencing second-season blues after a sensational first one when McCarthy first took over in late 2020.

Something similar happened to him at Cape Town City, where he arrived in 2018 by immediately delivering an MTN8 title, before tailing off in the second season.
