  • Cameroon and Algeria will meet in one of the tastiest 2022 FIFA World Cup CAF zone play-off matches tonight
  • Cameroon were the winners of the 2017 African Cup of Nations, while Algeria won the 2019 edition, signifying the magnitude of the tie
  • Neither team qualified for the global showpiece event in Russia back in 2018, and one nation will have to taste those same tears of disappointment again

Cameroon will chart a new path as the Indomitable Lions play their first match under Rigobert Song tonight at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.

They take on an Algerian side that disastrously attempted to defend their African Cup of Nations title in Cameroon. They could only gain a single point from the three group matches.

However, coach Djamel Belmadi has hardly tinkered with his squad for the potentially explosive two-legged 2022 FIFA World Cup tie.

Cameroon is on an 11-match unbeaten run since their last defeat - excluding their penalty shootout loss to Egypt at AFCON. This was to the Ivory Coast in Abidjan last September when the group phase of the World Cup qualifiers began.

They recovered to win four successive qualifiers after that, pipping the Ivorians to top place in their group.

The formidably Indomitable Lions last lost a home international in 1998 when Ghana beat them in Cup of Nations qualification. The game, ominously, was also played in Douala.

Algeria were one game away from equalling Italy’s world record of 34 unbeaten internationals when they flopped against Equatorial Guinea. They also when on to lose to the Ivory Coast, setting off a two-match losing streak.

But in World Cup qualification, Algeria are on a seven-match unbeaten run.

Algeria have beaten Cameroon only once before in a low-key tournament in Gabon in 1995 when they won 4-0 against a home-based Lions side.

Cameroon has beaten the Algerians at the 1986, 1998 and 2000 Cup of Nations finals and drew with them at the 1984 and 2004 editions.

They have played them in two World Cup qualifiers only once previously, in the qualifiers for the last tournament in Russia.

The two teams drew 1-1 in Algiers before Cameroon won 2-0 at home, though both finished behind Nigeria and Zambia in the group.

Native doctor who predicted Senegal's AFCON triumph says Ghana, Senegal & 3 others will qualify for World Cup

Popular Senegal based native doctor, Kahone has revealed Africa's five representatives at the upcoming FIFA World Cup which will be staged in Qatar later this year.

As reported by Sports Brief, Kahone, who correctly predicted Senegal's AFCON triumph, disclosed Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Senegal and Cameroon will represent Africa at the global showpiece.

Should his predictions come to pass, it will mean Mali will qualify for the World Cup for the first time in their history while Ghana and Cameroon return to the Mundial after missing out on the last edition.
