FootballJose Mourinho puts Sarri’s job on the line after Lazio’s lowly 3-0 defeat in Rome derby
- Sarri was meant to meet with Lazio President Claudio Lotito during the international break to discuss a possible extension of his contract
- But a 3-0 demolition by AS Roma on Sunday led to the club’s bosses reconsidering Sarri’s future at the club
- A decision on Sarri at Lazio will be made depending on where the club will be at the end of the current campaign
Maurizio Sarri’s future with Lazio is in doubt following the 3-0 humbling by AS Roma in the Rome derby on Sunday.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, cited in football Italia, both the manager and the club are unsure about what the future holds after Lazio’s lukewarm campaign so far this season.
In Sarri’s first season at the club, the Biancocelesti have had their highs and lows, and things were looking positive in the last few months.
However, Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Jose Mourinho’s Roma seems to have cast doubt on Sarri’s future as the club’s hierarchy connected the defeat to other heavy losses Lazio suffered this season.
Despite slowly progressing under the 63-year old, President Claudio Lotito is reportedly no longer keen on renewing Sarri’s deal at the club.
Lotito would rather wait until the end of the season to see whether Sarri is the right man to continue at the club.
Unhappy Sarri
On the other hand, Sarri is also not content at the club, and the Italian is particularly critical of the business the club did in the January transfer window.
He initially signed a two-year deal in 2021, and it was expected that he would extend the deal to 2025 soon, but things seem to have taken a dramatic turn.
While there is little doubt that Lazio will make the Europa League places, a top-four finish is looking highly unlikely for the team, especially with mixed performances they have had this season.
