Sad day in football as promising Nigerian footballer dies after brief illness

Nigerian football fraternities have been thrown into mourning following the shocking demise of Sunshine Queens' goalkeeper Elizabeth Johnson who died after brief illness.

Elizabeth Johnson was said to have trained with her teammates on Saturday and showed no sign of sickness, but an headache came in the evening before she passed on hours later.

She was one of the best female goalkeepers in Nigeria and had the dreams of playing in Europe when she was alive.

According to the report on Best Choice, Sunshine Queens' head of Media and Publicity, Femi Atolagbe made the announcement of Elizabeth Johnson's death.

“Very heartbreaking, Sunshine Queens lost one of it’s Goal Keepers, Elizabeth Johnson landed to the cold hands of death.
“Johnson who was hale and healthy trained with the team yesterday at the Ondo State Sports complex, Akure
“She earlier in the day complained of feeling feverish and dizzy. She was being taking to the hospital when she gave up the ghost on the way.
“Players, officials and management are still in shock.”

Nigeria hammer tough opponents to set up big battle against Egypt in World Cup qualifiers

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Nigerian female Under-17 national team known as Flamingos were impressive on Saturday evening, 19 March, beating Democratic Republic of Congo 5-0 in World Cup qualifiers.

The 2022 Under-17 Women's World Cup will be held in India and Nigerian girls are in high spirit to qualify for the prestigious tournament later this year.

Playing at the Benin stadium, the Flamingos started the match against DR Congo impressively and were confident of winning having won the first leg 3-0 away.

Opeyemi Ajakaiye scored a brace while Tumininu Adeshina, Anastasia Atume and Taiwo Afolabi all scored one goal each as the Nigeria’s U-17 girls got a place further in the race for the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

The Flamingos of Nigeria will now be facing Egypt in the next round of the qualifiers which is also expected to be tough.

The clash against Egypt will be the final round of the qualifiers and it is scheduled for the month of May.
