Royal AM are through to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Nedbank Cup.

This is after they had to fight off Swallows Football Club in a 1-0 win at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto. The strike came from a well-worked goal by Kabelo Mahlasela in the 79th minute of the match.

This came after Swallows captain Lebogang Mokoena missed a straightforward penalty with one of the worst penalties seen this season thus far.

The encounter was a tight one with little to separate both teams throughout. Chances were at a premium, though both teams could not be faulted for showing enterprise in their quest for the trophy.

The Dube Birds can now turn their attention fully to the DStv Premiership, where they are in big trouble flirting with relegation.

Swallows are currently in 14th place on 18 points after 22 matches. They are one point above TS Galaxy on 17 points in 15th place, which is a relegation-promotion playoff spot. Worryingly, Baroka FC is also in last place on 17 points, setting up an intriguing battle in who will escape the drop.

Earlier, the University of Pretoria advanced to the quarterfinals at the expense of the Venda Football Academy. AmaTuks won 4-3 on penalties after the exciting tie ended 3-3 after extra time.

Tuks' goals were scored by Thabang Sibanyoni, Keegan Allan and Wonderboy Makhubu. Academy struck via Banele Gama, Rankoko Tau and Gerald Takwara.

Tuks and Royal will join Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants, who booked their place in the next round earlier this week after defeating Mathaithati FC and Orlando Pirates respectively.

Marumo Gallants joined Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Nedbank Cup.

As reported on Sports Brief, this is after they defeated Orlando Pirates 5-4 in a penalty shootout. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time.

The match was a classic knockout encounter as both teams went for the jugular from the get-go.
