English Premier League side Newcastle United are now leading the race to sign Nigerian international Victor Osimhen who has been impressive for Napoli, Complete Sports reports.
The Super Eagles' forward joined the Italian outfit from French club Lille back in September 2020 and has been a key member under Luciano Spalletti.
Osimhen has found the back of the net 21 times in 51 appearances for the Partenopei in all competitions which have attracted interest from other clubs.
Although his contract with Napoli runs until 2025, the 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from Naples in recent times.
The latest report by Italian radio presenter Luca Cerchione, claims there are currently three clubs in the race, with Newcastle battling Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The presenter added that the English club are leading the race already, but that can only happen if the magpies are able to avoid relegation in order to stand a chance of signing him in the upcoming market.
The forward has been in strong form during the 2021-22 campaign, scoring 11 times and registering four assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.
Osimhen scores in Napoli’s draw with Cagliari
Meanwhile, Osimhen was the hero for Napoli as the Super Eagles striker singlehandedly rescued a point for Luciano Spaletti’s side against Cagliari on Monday, February 21.
The Super Eagles striker came off the bench to score his seventh league goal of the season in the 87th minute to level against relegation-threatened Cagliari side who took a surprise lead early in the second half.

Newcastle United interested in Nigeria’s Zaidu Sanusi
Sports Brief earlier reported that Newcastle United are currently targeting Super Eagles left-back Zaidu Sanusi as the Premier League club aims to start rebuilding its team ahead of next season.
The Magpies are presently battling with relegation in the English top-flight but have already started preparations for the 2022/23 season.
Zaidu Sanusi presently plays for FC Porto in Portugal and has been the first choice left-back since he joined the Portuguese club three years ago.
