The once highly-rated midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni will attempt to resurrect his career in the lower rungs of South African football.
The 32-year-old Sangweni, who represented the likes of Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United, has signed for Eastern Cape team BCM Stars in the ABC Motsepe League. The team announced this news on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the City Press, Stars released a media statement saying:
“The club is pleased to announce the signing of Thamsanqa Sangweni. Thamsanqa Sangweni previously played for teams like Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United. Welcome Thami Sangweni."
The team plays in the Eastern Cape's B stream of the ABC Motsepe League. They are currently co-leading that particular division with Sinenkani FC, which will take on TTM in a Nedbank Cup Last 16 match this weekend.
Sangweni had been released by another Eastern Cape-based team in the form of Chippa United last July, according to Soccer Laduma. He had only joined them in February last year after bouncing from club to club, with his new employers now the 10th of his career.
He is the younger brother of the legendary former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates defender Thamsanqa Sangweni and Mandla Sangweni, who represented Amazulu.
As reported on Goal.com, Mandla Sangweni made headlines in 2013 when he was arrested for shooting the brothers' uncles in a dispute over the alleged use of witchcraft. The unnamed uncle survived the shooting after a lengthy stay in hospital.
