  • Former South African international and Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela has urged his former club to prioritise signing a high scoring striker
  • Mphela believes the Amakhosi must look for someone with the calibre of Mamelodi Sundowns' free-scoring forward Peter Shalulile
  • He stated that there weren't enough forwards of the Namibian's quality in South Africa, suggesting they look abroad like they successfully have before

Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela believes that the Amakhosi need a Peter Shalulile-level striker to ever hope of competing again.

The Namibian has been nothing short of deadly for Mamelodi Sundowns this season. Shalulile has scored 17 goals in 29 goals across all competitions, including a league-leading 13 in the DStv Premiership.

Soccer Laduma quoted Mphela as saying that there was not a striker of Shalulile's quality available currently in the league. Instead, he suggested they show the same kind of scouting knowledge that helped them land Zambian forward Collins Mbesuma nearly 20 years ago, who had a record-breaking run with the Amakhosi.

Mphela is one of the few players with the distinction of having turned out in the colours of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mphela added:

"In the local market, I don't think there are strikers who are consistent enough. Going abroad is an option, but they shouldn't just bring anyone for the sake of it."

Chiefs has had a miserable resumption to top-flight activities since the December-January break. Goal scoring, or a lack thereof, is at the root of their current ailment.

They were defeated 1-0 by TS Galaxy in the Nedbank as reported by by Goal.com. They then continued firing blanks as per SowetanLIVE, being held to a drab 0-0 draw by Cape Town City.
