Jose Mourinho received one of the most unique receptions when he returned to San Siro as opposition manager for the first time since 2010.

Inter Milan hosted Mourinho’s AS Roma at the San Siro on Tuesday, February 8 for the quarter-final of the Copa Italia, with The Special One facing a side he has very fond memories of.

In 2008, Mourinho became Inter Milan boss and famously helped the Nerazzurri to the treble in 2010.

He would go on to become Real Madrid boss soon after his success in Italy but Inter is a club that has always been close to his heart.

This was evident on Tuesday as footage of Inter fans roaring, applauding and singing for Mourinho on his return made waves on social media.

According to journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Mourinho took a seat at the technical bench before standing back up to wave at the Inter fans.

Mourinho holds a unique record in Italy as his feat in the 2009-10 season with Inter makes him the only manager in Italian football history to have ever won a treble.

Inter beat Roma to advance to semis

As far as the actual game was concerned, Inter Milan proved to good for Mourinho’s Roma as they proceeded to the semi-finals thanks to a 2-0 win.

Goals from Edin Dzeko and Alexis Sanchez were enough to give Simeone Inzaghi’s side a pass to the last four of the competition.

Inter dominated from early on at the San Siro as Nicolo Barella's long-range strike hit the post inside six minutes, sending an early warning to the visitors after Dzeko found the opener in the second minute.

Alexis Sanchez made sure of the result in the 68th minute with a 25-yard strike that ensured Inter set up a date with either AC Milan or Lazio in the semis.

Interestingly, the win keeps Inter in contention for all three trophies Mourinho won back in 09-10.
