Papa Bouba Diouf, Pape Diouf, Bruno Metsu and other Senegal sports personalities who passed away in recent years have been remembered by the country after winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

The West African football powerhouse defeated Egypt on penalties to be crowned champions of Africa for the first time in their history.

However, the story is only complete with the generation that began it all, lead by Papa Bouba Diouf, who died last year.

The Senegalese Football Federation took to social media to pay tribute to Bruno Metsu and Diouf who were members of the 2002 AFCON final team.

Other top personalities, like former Olympique Marseille general manager, Pape Diouf was also remembered.

"We do not forget you. This star is also for you. Rest in peace," wrote the FA on Twitter.

Lamine Diack, who rose to the highest rank in Athletics, by becoming the International Association of Athletics President was also celebrated.

Senegal are champions of Africa

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Senegal are the winners of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations staged in Cameroon.

The Lions of Teranga stunned Egypt 4-2 on post-match penalties to win the continental showpiece.

The thrilling match played at Olembe's Pau Biya Stadium had to be decided via the shootouts after both teams settled for a goalless draw in regulation time.

Senegal given heroes welcome after AFCON triumph

There were thousands of football fans on the streets of Dakar on Monday evening, February 7, when the Senegalese national team players arrived after winning the 2021 AFCON title.

Sadio Mane and his teammates at the Senegalese national team fought well at the just concluded 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon where they defeated Egypt in the final.

The final encounter against the Egyptian national team was not an easy ride for Senegalese players as Mohamed Salah and his teammates also wanted to win the title.
