A majority of the reaction on social media to Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi's startling claim varied between skepticism and derision.
Mngqithi revealed that the cash flush club was once interested in signing Real Madrid's Brazilian superstar Vinicius Junior and Liverpool's new Colombian acquisition Luis Diaz. This came as 'The Brazilians' unveiled Bolivian midfielder Erwin Saavedra as the club's latest signing.
Mngqithi told iDiski Times:
“We were on top of Diaz, unfortunately, we delayed one or two days, and he signed for Porto and now he’s at Liverpool. We’ve looked at a lot of players – I don’t want to lie to you.”

FootballMngqithi explained that they were also monitoring Vinícius Júnior at the Brazilian Cup but slacked in approaching, according to Soccer Laduma. He then signed for Spanish giants Real Madrid and is now one of the biggest stars in world football.
The April Fool's Day-worthy claim had rival fans laughing in derision, while Sundowns fans were on the defensive.
David Olifant said:
"This Manqoba is getting crazy ideas and over-excited, now. I'm sure he was about to sign Ansu Fati as well..."
Lebogang Dlamini said:
"I remember when CR7 was leaving Juventus he was caught between Man United and Kaizer Chiefs."

"Kazier Chiefs also wanted to sign Haaland before he went to Dortmund. Source: trust me bro."

"Sundowns mean business!"
Nkanyiso Mantengu said:
"Downs are on a mission to be feared... looool. A talented young star can not come to a farmer's league called PSL. Where do you find a leading goalscorer with 11 goals?"

In other news related to Mamelodi Sundowns, Teboho Mokoena is a Mamelodi Sundowns player but the debate around whether his transfer to the Brazilians was a mistake rages on.
Sports Brief earlier reported that Mokoena signed from Supersport United despite receiving interest from clubs both locally and internationally.
The Citizen recently raised the question about whether Mokoena had made a mistake by joining the Brazilians as he would have to fight for his place in an already congested team.
