- Alex Iwobi received a red card shortly after coming on as a substitute, and fans blamed him for putting pressure on the defence
A number of angry fans have stormed the comment section of the social media handles of some Super Eagles stars sending death threats following their loss to Tunisia.
Midfielder Alex Iwobi and goalkeeper Maduka Okoye have been subject to death threats following their performance in the 1-0 loss to the Carthage Eagles.
A 46th-minute strike from outside the area by Youssef Msakni was enough to take the North African side to the quarterfinal while Nigeria exited the tournament.
Some fans are left furious blaming Okoye for the goal as they lament that the goalkeeper should have saved Msakni’s long-range effort.
Alex Iwobi who came on as a substitute in the second half was shown a straight red in what VAR termed 'dangerous tackle', as the Super Eagles were reduced to ten men.
Nigeria eventually lost the game and Okoye and Iwobi have been subject to death threats on social media.
Death threats sent to players
Punch reports that an Instagram user @Clifford_Marius wrote under a picture posted by Okoye: “It will not be well with you. I pray you don’t see next month, you will die in a plane crash.”
@la_isle on Instagram wrote, “Maduka, you will not live long. You sold this AFCON match to the Tunisians.”
@pelexofLagos wrote, “Maduka Okoye, God will punish you and your family, your incompetence cost us AFCON.”
Twitter user @akpanyung_ said: “Going to hate on Iwobi till I die.”
Channels TV are now reporting that Maduka Okoye and Alex Iwobi have deactivated the comment section of their Instagram page following the deaths threats.
